People volunteering or working with children or vulnerable adults are sometimes legally required to have a CRB check. A volunteer, is defined as a person who performs any activity which involves spending time, unpaid (except for travelling and other out-of-pocket expenses), doing something which aims to benefit someone (individuals or groups) other than or in addition to close relatives. (1997 Police Act (Criminal Records) Regulations 2002)
Full-time volunteers are those involved in programmes that last around 35 hours per week and they are treated like all other volunteers by the CRB, providing that they are only reimbursed or receive an allowance that covers actual expenses.
Charities operating shops or other facilities that are often provided for the vulnerable will also make judgments about the provision of basic CRB checks for their volunteers.
